Forum Marketing Ahead – Proceed With Caution

As any veteran of forum marketing will tell you, marketing inside of a forum can be risky business. If you are not prepared and just barge into a forum to start posting whatever you are trying to sell, it can be marketing suicide. Forums are meant to represent “sanctuaries”. Forums are safe places where like minded people can go to make friends and share information.

Done correctly, many forum marketers will realize tremendous success from their efforts. Forum marketing can be a great way to create good streams of solid traffic and make some great business contacts, in the process.

With all of the forums that are available online, you need to focus on finding those forums that are relative to your market. After finding a few, join the forums that are the busiest. It won’t be worth your effort to join forums that do not have a lot of members unless your market caters to a very small niche market.

Forums have rules that members abide by. Study the rules of conduct for every forum that you join, then adhere to these rules. There is always a wealth of information about the forum in the first few topics that are available to look through.

The basic concept of forum marketing means to establish yourself within the community as a helpful member who has brought something of value to add to the whole community. Don’t spend your first few days campaigning as the resident “expert” within the community. Every forum already has their experts.

Becoming another expert within any busy forum will take time and careful effort. First, know your product and market better than anyone else. When you are ready to start posting informative advice in the forums, you do not want to have to second guess yourself. Because if you post flawed advice, or tips in a forum post, someone will certainly correct you on it. Then, you will look like that amateur who still has a few things to learn.

No one knows everything about a topic. When you set yourself up as someone of authority, though, you need to post information and advice that is helpful and correct. In a short time, this will help to establish you as someone in the forum that others can trust.

It is a good idea to spend your first day or two looking over the forum and finding out who the resident experts of the particular forum are. Often, you will find that a couple of these community experts are very big Internet marketers. Try not to view these forum marketing members as your competition, but as nuggets of opportunity.

Making friends with the experts in a forum is to be included in the inner circle. This is exactly what you want to do. Becoming a part of the inner circle is to be connected. This takes time and finesse on your part. Patience is a virtue with Internet marketing and so it is with forum marketing. You may be the “newbie” in the forum today, but tomorrow you could well be considered the pro of your marketing field if you play the forum marketing game correctly.

Creating some friendly banter, even some easy going controversy, is actually encouraged. It keeps a forum lively and entertaining. Commenting when you have something good to add is the general rule. Forums are all about helping others that have common goals. If you do not spam or get involved in “flaming”, forum marketing can be a breeze.
